Non-Destructive Testing or NDT is performed by NDT technicians who are fully certified in their respective field. NDT is often required for welding projects where certain welding techniques, such as full pen welding, is utilized. Since welds are often known to experience loads and fatigue over time, their ability to fail increases as time goes on if not welded per proper specification. NDT (ultrasonic testing, dye penetration, magnetic particle inspection, radiographic, etc) works by indicating a lack of cracks in the radiograph, showing clear passage of sound through the weld and back, and/or indicating a clear surface without penetrant captured in the cracks. These tests help to determine properties of a material, component, structure or system for characteristic differences or welding defects and discontinuities without causing damage to the steel or welds.
